Book Review: THE OPPOSITE OF EVERYONE by Joshilyn Jackson

The Opposite of Everyone

Title: The Opposite Of Everyone
Author:  Joshilyn Jackson
Category/Genre: Contemporary Adult
My Star Rating: 4/5

Goodreads Blurb:

Born in Alabama, Paula Vauss spent the first decade of her life on the road with her free-spirited young mother, Kai, an itinerant storyteller who blended Hindu mythology with Southern Oral Tradition to re-invent their history as they roved. But everything, including Paula’s birthname Kali Jai, changed when she told a story of her own—one that landed Kai in prison and Paula in foster care. Separated, each holding her own secrets, the intense bond they once shared was fractured.

These days, Paula has reincarnated herself as a tough-as-nails divorce attorney with a successful practice in Atlanta. While she hasn’t seen Kai in fifteen years, she’s still making payments on that Karmic debt—until the day her last check is returned in the mail, along with a cryptic letter. “I am going on a journey, Kali. I am going back to my beginning; death is not the end. You will be the end. We will meet again, and there will be new stories. You know how Karma works.”

Then Kai’s most treasured secret literally lands on Paula’s doorstep, throwing her life into chaos and transforming her from only child to older sister. Desperate to find her mother before it’s too late, Paula sets off on a journey of discovery that will take her back to the past and into the deepest recesses of her heart. With the help of her ex-lover Birdwine, an intrepid and emotionally volatile private eye who still carries a torch for her, this brilliant woman, an expert at wrecking families, now has to figure out how to put one back together—her own.

The Opposite of Everyone is a story about story itself, how the tales we tell connect us, break us, and define us, and how the endings and beginnings we choose can destroy us . . . and make us whole. Laced with sharp humor and poignant insight, it is beloved New York Times bestselling author Joshilyn Jackson at her very best.

My Review:

**I received a complimentary advance reader's copy in exchange for a honest review**

Holy heart-wrenching, suspenseful mess!  This book was an emotional roller coaster, filled with self-destruction and masochism to the nth degree.  And I loved every minute of it!

Generally, I don't enjoy contemporary novels.  I crave fantasy and supernatural, something that takes me from the angst of everyday life and tosses me in the middle of a stranger's world.  Or hey, at least a little spice.  Maybe this one clicked with me because it had so much Hindu mythology laced in the story-line, allowing me to face how uncomfortably familiar Paula's character and world were to my own.

I loved the character growth and the complexity of dysfunction present, but what struck me the most here was the writing itself.  I have never read anything from Joshilyn Jackson before; I was not prepared for the purity in her words.  Somehow, Ms. Jackson is able to make an anxiety attack sound poetic and abandonment read like a lyrical masterpiece.  She is by far one of the most talented writers I've found.

My one and only complaint is how long it took me to warm up to Paula.  She was a balls to the wall badass, and even though we're given a fishbowl view into her childhood to better understand why, it wasn't until about half way through the book that I actually liked her.  I was more invested in the story than the main character for the better part of the read.

Blog tour w/ Excerpt and Giveaway: A LIFE LESS ORDINARY by Victoria Bernadine

Title: A Life Less Ordinary
Author: Victoria Bernadine
Genre: Contemporary Romance/Chick Lit

Blurb:
For the last fifteen years, Rose “Manny” Mankowski has been a very good girl. She turned her back on her youthful fancies and focused on her career. But now, at the age of 45, she's questioning her choices and feeling more and more disconnected from her own life. When she's passed over for promotion and her much younger new boss implies Manny's life will never change, something snaps. In the blink of an eye, she's quit her job, sold her house and cashed in her pension, and she's leaving town on a six month road trip.
After placing a personal ad for a travelling companion, she's joined in her mid-life crisis by Zeke Powell, the cynical, satirical, most-read – and most controversial – blogger for the e-magazine, What Women Want. Zeke's true goal is to expose Manny's journey as a pitiful and desperate attempt to reclaim her lost youth – and increase his readership at the same time. Leaving it all behind for six months is just an added bonus.
Now, armed with a bagful of destinations, a fistful of maps, and an out-spoken imaginary friend named Harvey, Manny's on a quest to rediscover herself – and taking Zeke along for the ride.

Purchase A LIFE LESS ORDINARY

Excerpt:

The coffee shop wasn’t very busy.  Only a couple of tables were occupied, with several more people standing in line. Manny sat rather nervously at her table sipping her third vanilla latte and wondering if she was as crazy as Rebecca and Daisy claimed. This would be her fourth interview today of a potential travelling companion and she hoped this guy would be more of a possibility than the other three she’d already met. Oh, they all seemed nice enough, but Olive had been jittery and they’d quickly realized their personalities would never mesh well enough to travel together for six months. Isaac had had a predatory, speculative gleam in his eyes as he looked her over–and she hadn’t needed Harvey to tell her to stay as far away from him as possible.
Darius was very sweet and charming, just eighteen, but he couldn’t pay his own way, and Manny wasn’t about to support him for six months. He’d shrugged and accepted her decision with an adorable smile and she offered to call Daisy’s boss, Max, to see if he had any work that Darius could do. Darius had thanked her and even paid for their lattes, and they’d chatted for a good forty-five minutes before he’d finally gone on his way. Yes, he would have been a good choice–and she might change her mind if she didn’t find anyone before she left in two weeks.
You can always go by yourself.
I know. But it would be more fun with someone else.
You’ll have me.
Manny glanced at Harvey sitting in the chair across from her. He was dressed casually in jeans and a button down shirt open at the throat to show the strong lines of his neck and chest.
You’re not real.
Harvey winked at her. Just checking.
She shook her head and Harvey blinked out of existence as the door opened and a darkly handsome man walked in. He paused in the doorway and removed his sunglasses as he glanced around the small room. Securely hidden in her corner, Manny considered him.
Tall; over six feet. Dark. Handsome, with large, dark eyes and full pouty lips. His black, tousled hair and dark stubble on his face gave him a sexy, scruffy appearance. He was slim, with broad shoulders, narrow hips and long legs encased in jeans.
I’ll bet he has a great ass.
I’ll bet you’re right.
He’s like a younger version of me.
Manny blinked at the man standing in the doorway and realized Harvey was right. Oh, they didn’t exactly look alike, but they had similar colouring, and a similar underlying confidence and arrogance in their stance. Probably something natural when you’re that naturally gorgeous, Manny thought ruefully, or, in Harvey’s case, that unnaturally perfect.
I’d almost be jealous...if I was real.
But you’re not–and he’s quite something. I wonder who he’s here to me...eeet.
Her internal dialogue trailed off as the stranger’s gaze met hers. He gave a half smile and headed towards her.

BLACK HILLS BLESSING by A.C. Wilson: Book Blitz

Title: BLACK HILLS BLESSING
Author: A.C. Wilson
Category/Genre: Young Adult/Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

Garrett Johnson is a sexy cowboy from South Dakota, who curbs any woman’s need for commitment. His relationships are all about the fun; sex, drinking, and companionship. If she wants more from him, the game is over and he moves on. It has been this way since he left his hometown of Hot Springs after high school graduation.
Garrett is looking for something, anything that might take away the monotonous feeling of traveling down the same dead end path. An argument over the future of his family’s ranch sends him out into the middle of a snowstorm only to be rescued by a dark-haired, golden eyed siren. A captivating woman who could change the game altogether!
Rayne Randall left South Dakota fifteen years earlier in anger and grief at the tragic loss of her mother. She has only now returned after the death of her estranged father. There is more pain and destruction in this place than any other. She has been cursed to live each day with the understanding that her father killed her mother.
Rayne wants nothing to do with her family’s ranch. There are no ties here worth remembering! So why did she have to meet a sinfully handsome cowboy who would inspire her to dig for the truth? Assuming the job as her foreman and her friend, Garrett Johnson just might be the blessing Rayne never thought would come.

Excerpt:

“I think God was punishing me. I don’t deserve to be loved.” She was calm as she said the words. There was a weariness in her voice that spoke eloquently of a woman giving up. She was defeated and the defeat had hollowed her. No wonder she was angry and closed off. Garrett wrapped his arms tightly around her, hugging her body into his.
“You’re so wrong about that, Rayne. You deserve to be loved and cherished.” His chest felt like there was a heavy weight sitting on it. His throat closed with emotion.
How could anyone think they weren’t worthy of love? How could so much destruction happen to one person?  If Garrett had been in Rayne’s shoes, he would have raged and struggled just as she had. The mess was coming to life and he wasn’t certain how to fix any of it.

GIRL LOST by Nazarea Andrews: Blog tour w/ Review

Title:  GIRL LOST
Author: Nazarea Andrews
Category/Genre: New Adult/Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

Northern was supposed to be a fresh start—a place where people didn’t know who I was or how I had spent years in and out of mental institutes. People didn't know about my parents death or the island no one heard of. But when Peter sits next to me in lit class, I can’t stop the memories, and I don’t want to. He looks too much like the boy from the island, and despite my best intentions, coaxes my secrets from me.

He’s gorgeous, irresistible, a little mad, and completely lost—we are a pair of broken cogs in a world neither of us truly fits into. He is somehow gentle and fierce, heartbreaking in his devotion and savage in his defense.

When Belle, his best friend, shows up, pale and lovely and sick, Peter pulls away from me, a startling withdrawal. It’s a relationship that scares and confuses me. She is at times warm and friendly, and other times is violent and unpredictable.

Peter says that he wants me, but refuses to let himself get close. And there are secrets, surrounding both of us, that border on nightmares. As the memories close in, as Belle gets sicker and more violent, I’m torn between what is true and what I believe, and what this magical boy knows about my mysterious past.

My Review:

*I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review*
Star rating: 3/5

I didn't really know what to make of this one. It was nothing like I expected, though that's not necessarily a bad thing. Peter Pan is without a doubt my favorite childhood story, and this was such an engaging take to the story. I spent almost the entire book (right up until the last few pages) wondering if Gwendolyn was crazy or not...But that's okay, because Nazarena kept me hooked the entire way through to find out. The writing style was unique, though a bit confusing. I found the transitions between flash backs and the present were unclear, and I often had to reread parts to understand what was happening. While Gwendolyn and Peter were fairy well developed, I think the other characters were left lacking. The ending kind of peeved me. Nothing was resolved, and I've looked and found no indication that this was the start of a series.
